Susan’s story - the beginning of Orchards

Susan* was in what’s called a “survival sex” situation, faced with a “choice” between selling sex and homelessness. Orchards offered her safe accommodation, counselling, and long-term support in partnership with a local church to empower her to rebuild her life.

‘I was renting a flat which was too expensive for me. I was living on my own, selling sex to pay my rent. I was in fear of my life at the time. I felt ready to accept some support and stop selling sex completely, I wanted to change my life for the better. I wanted to try and live my life, not feeling anxious and scared all of the time. I’d had enough and I really needed some help and support. If I wasn’t able to pay my rent I would have been in debt and homeless…Things have changed massively for me. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance to live the life I’ve always wanted. The stress of survival is no longer hanging over me. Orchards saved my life.'

Susan’s voice helped shape our services for the many women who have followed in her footsteps. Her courage and resilience continue to inspire us as we move forward.
